While in a pet store, an iguana is under a lot of stress. Wouldn't you be with a bunch of scary, smelly human gawking at you through some funky invisible force field (glass)? :)
Sounds like he's a healthy baby. In the post just below yours, there's the same discussion. A healthy baby iguana thinks that everything is out to get him, and eat him. It is only natural, and a sign of good, fiesty health, that he is trying to "save" himself from your predatory grasp of death ;)
Persistence is key. Handle him, be gentle, yet firm. Eventually, he'll get used to you. For some animals, it takes a few weeks, others months and/or YEARS.
