Well.... 72 hours later, we've got the ambient temps in the rooms up to 80+ degrees. Humidity bounces between 50 & 75% and we're swapping MV bulbs around between enclosures for basking heat and UV where applicable, species specific locations have been established according to atmosphere. We've heard from one company regarding donations, and have received at least a dozen calls from local individuals wanting to adopt specific animals - which is interesting since no comprehensive list has been made public to the best of my knowledge....
One Burm is fighting an established URI but is making excellent progress, a common boa may be coming out of one, two gold tegus didn't make it beyond 24 hours and I just had a juvenile (3 1/2') Nile monitor pass away in my lap.
Half a dozen volunteers were here for Nearly a full 8 hours cleaning, disinfecting, setting up tanks/enclosures, and assisting in taking measurements and pictures of all of the animals. I just needed a break as I still have to make and bag salad and San Diego diet before stopping forthe night.
There are times that I simply cannot believe the things that individuals think they can do or think that what they are doing to their animals is correct husbandry or even marginally acceptable. By my calculations there should be at least 25 counts of cruelty against this shop just with regard to the animals that BRRE took - I haven't had a chance to even ask about the OTHER 65 animals yet. I just don't know what people are thinking sometimes. You would think that a business dealing with exotic animals - some with potential values of over $1000 - would be bending over backwards to make sure that their investments are safe. A completely healthy animal is few and far between around here these days. "Fortunately" the majority of problems may be reversed. Mites can be killed, malnutrition can be solved, dehydration - even the severe cases, can be reversed with some careful administering of baths, drinking water, and constant humidity. I just don't get it. If even basic care requirements had been observed, this entire situation may have been avoided altogether.
Well...With the story hitting the AP news wire roughly 12 hours after it occured maybe the message will reach a few more people regarding the care of their animals. Of course, for those that don't keep any form of reptile it may still be a stretch to consider anything other than a dog or cat something resembling an actual animal nevermind a "pet". One can only hope that with time and education that narrow-minded thinking can be widened, even if just a little bit....
Sorry about the length.... I just had to let off some steam..... We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
