Iguana tips heating lamp, survives fire
By Globe Staff, 2/9/2002
pet iguana caused a one-alarm fire at a duplex in Erving yesterday afternoon, Fire Department Deputy Chief Gary Burnett said.
The lizard was in a 2-foot by 4-foot cage inside the home of John Bigelow on East Main Street when it knocked over a construction lamp rigged as a heater for the cold-blooded reptile, Burnett said.
The lamp landed on the cage's wooden bottom and started a fire. Burnett said a neighbor noticed the smoke filling the house and called firefighters at 3:30 p.m. The small blaze was extinguished in an hour, but the house sustained smoke and fire damage.
The iguana survived. ''His nose is a little singed, but other than that, he's pretty happy,'' Burnett said.
