Since I can forsee my posts to a thread below turning into a huge blow out discussion as more people come to the forum today and read and reply I would like to share my personal views on the iguana issue, as well as the pet store issue.
We all know iguanas are mistreated and misunderstood as a species. I feel that if you want something done, you do it 100% or it won't get done. Simple as that.
I want pet stores to stop selling animals like iguanas. So in my life, I DO NOT SUPPORT PET STORES. PERIOD. I have seen iguanas at my local store covered in mites, burnt to a crisp, leg missing, MBD severly etc. Like you all have. For ME personally I refuse to take them in or buy them. I do understand taken in an iguana that needs help, but in the pet stores eyes many times, especially with young iguanas that means that person will be back for supplies. Which means money. How many of you have seen "Iguana package! 250.00$ with free Iguana!" well thats my point. You will be buying more of their stuff, giving them more money, all at iguanas expense because if it works, which apparently their scam does, it will work OVER AND OVER AND OVER again.
I just don't understand people anymore. They want certain stores to stop selling certain pets, but half the time they give "exceptions" well I personally don't and I am ready and willing to share my views on it any chance I get. It is HEARTBREAKING to see an iguana at a pet store with such horrible conditions. And for many of you, if you had not taken that iguana in you would have missed out on countless joys and love from it. But for me, and I wish for other people who are still "iguana-less" it just has to STOP somewhere so store owners will realize its a lost cause to even put out the money to house the iguanas until someone buys them or takes them in.
I do not buy from pet stores. My local store doesn't sell animals, and thats the way it should be in my opinion. Sorry if you disagree. Its not about how much you love or care for an iguana, its about future iguanas and their life. And the quality of the species as a whole. I adopt every animal I have. Why? BECAUSE YOU EITHER SUPPORT THE STORE OR YOU DON'T.
If I honestly saw an iguana that really was in dire need of help, I still wouldn't take it from the store. Sorry. My avenue would be having the S.P.C.A. come in, take the animal into custody, and I would adopt it that day. I understand this cannot always be the way things go, but in that case just DON'T TAKE THE IGUANA FOR THE REASON IT WILL HELP THE SPECIES IN THE FUTURE AS A WHOLE. If all we are doing is moaing and groaning but at the end of the day we will take iguanas that they can't sell because they are sick or too old, off their hands what have we done? Nothing but help THE PET STORE.
I have so many feelings on this issue. But I cannot stand things and people being "flip floppy" their is a grey area in this whole debate these days, but if you want pet stores to stop selling them then it needs to be BLACK AND WHITE. NO IGUANAS FROM A PET STORE. EVER.
Those are my personal opinions, think, feel, write about them how you will. Thats how I live my life, and I find sharing it with others only gives them an extra point of view.
