They will usually do it if they are frightened for some or other reason. I got a fright and pulled him out immediately. He then just lay there in my hand, stiff and was playing dead. I put him under his basking spot and after a few minutes he was breathing again. and a few minutes later he was walking around.
Next time I'll be prepared!
