In Reply to: Few more questions from mofo! posted by Badmofo on February 01, 2002 at 00:06:16:
: 1. How many watts should your merc vapor bulb be if you have a 4x3x3 foot plastic mesh cage?
Gonna need high wattage if that is your only heat source. Mesh cages do not retain heat... Consider covering the sides of the cage with a shower curtain or other plastic material to retain heat and humidity.
: 2. Which vapor bulb is better the T-Rex or the other brand?
I have yet to see any real testing of the actual UV output of these bulbs. I would just go ahead and use a flourescent UV bulb such as Iguana Light or Reptisun.
: 3. Ceramic heat bulb or black light heat bulb for night time? Which one is better? (Black light looks the coolest!) Do you need a heat panel if you have both lights(Merc/black heat bulb)?
NO light at night is best. A ceramic heating element would be the better way to go. If you want things to look cool under black lights, get some posters or splash neon paint on your walls.
: 4. Humitifier, big bowl of water under lamp, or spray bottle?
All three. Humidifier will keep the humidity levels up for the most part, but your Ig still needs to be misted a few times a day, and water is a MUST. Iguanas DO drink water.
: What is the best way to humitify a mesh cage? Would i have to humitify the whole room?(i hope not) How important is humitity to an ig?
Humidity is VERY important. It is vital to a healthy and happy iguana. Like I said above, cover the sides of your cage (part of the top too if you want) with a plastic material, or anything else that will hold the humidity in. You dont have to humidify the whole room... You would never get the humidity levels high enough that way. Aim a humidifier into the cage, and mist several times a day. I use a clothes dryer duct attached to my humidifier to direct the humidity into the cage.
: 5. I was wondering if www.iguanaden.com is a reliable source for a total food diet? They clam you dont need supplementation if on their specific diet, is this true?
A proper diet does not need supplementation. It is possible to overdo the calcium, although most people will not provide enough. We do not supplement any of our ignuanas, and they all have great blood tables.
: I want an iguana but im still researching! Im glad i found this web site.
: Thank you for all the great answers so far readers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, dont go out and buy a baby. Check for rescues in your area, if there are none, look at the adoption links on this site. There are a TON of unwanted iguanas.
