: Hi Barb,
I also own quite a zoo...4 birds, 1 box turtle, 3 dogs, 3 cats, and a little ig. Certain animals can be out together. The turtle can be out with any animal except the dogs, they think he is a moving ball. The cats can be out with the dogs and the birds can be out with the turtle and the ig. Our family lost our first little ig by one of the cats. We keep our little ig, Sneakers, in one of the kid's rooms. The cage is built into what used to be the closet. The first cage we built didn't have a strong enough top on it. Even though the cats were not allowed in that room and the door was suppose to remain shut, the door didn't shut all the way once. One of the cats went in and colapsed the screen top to get to the ig. By the time we found the poor little guy he was in so bad of shock that he didn't live. We have since redesigned the top to keep little igs in and cats out. We recently had an incident of actually shutting the bedroom door and locking one of the cats in the same room as the ig. This time there was no harm done as there was no way into the cage. Just always plan for the what if. Thats what we didn't do the first time.
Like laura said, I don't think that I would introduce a little ig to the cats. Right now when I take Sneakers out to cruise the house on my shoulder, all cats are put in a another bedroom and the dogs are still outside in their kennels. I also use a leash as need to be able to retrieve Sneakers quickly in the event that someone accidently opens that bedroom door while I have her out. Even when Sneakers get alot bigger it will only be under supervised conditions that ever the two will meet.
The only animals that I had to give away was a pair of finches. No matter how we discourged the cats from going near the cage, those birds were just to flighty and aroused the cat instincts for attaching. We would wake up in the middle of the night from hearing the finch cage crash to the floor and rush in and catch finches in mid air with our bare hands. Finally gave them to a good home with no cats. They are much happier.
After all that rambling, what I'm saying is that if you really would like to have an ig and have done your homework on their care, by all means join our family, just watch those cats.
I really have to get a life, Joan
