I'm not Mr. D, but I can help with 2 & 3
Don't know about the merc vapor bulb, I just use heat lamps, full spectrum incadescent, and sunlight outside.
About outside, always stay with the ig. You will be surprised how fast and how far they can get into trouble. Vet I work for only mananged to save an ig patient once from impacting GI tract on pine needles when it escaped from owners- second time, it didn't make it. There's lots for the igs to get in to. Mine like the leash outside, one doesn't care what is going on, the other prefers a quiet day (no kids, few cars nearby).
I have 2 rotties and they are both OK with the igs. One ig is better with the dogs- she is fearless. The other gets a little nervous and that makes the dogs more likely to pounce it seems. My dogs don't actually pounce the igs, but they get that look like they are going to. I never leave the igs alone with the dogs, except my Husky who loves them and is very good. My calmer ig walks right up to the Husky, not a care in the world, but she does avoid the Rotties for the most part. Either one could hurt the dogs if they wanted to- a good whip across the face or scratch of the claws or even a bite. Then I'd worry more about the dogs' retaliation.
