I hear ya.......mine is 3 feet!!! I've had him for 1.5 weeks. I made the mistake of not wearing long sleeves .......I only did that once...Everyone at work it horrified to look at my scratches, I don't think they are that bad.
I think he is a little better already. Every day I give him a bath and I actually think he knows it's coming. He needs something predictable in his life. He seems to struggle for a shorter time over the last few days.
I know people have told me to let him be for a while....but, he was left alone probably for years without handling. I'm one of those people that just rips off the bandaid fast....it'll only hurt for a second.
I take him around and show him the house, I'm sure he has had sensory deprivation for years!! He looks around and calms down. We sit for a while, then I put him back. Of course I wear gloves and never let my guard down.
