While I agree with your post I wanted to add a thought -

When you go to a place like Circuit City, as a customer you count on the salesman knowing a thing or two about the TV he's trying to sell you, when you go to the car dealership, you count on the sales man knowing a thing or two about the car he is trying to sell you -Why then should someone not expect the same from the pet store where they are selling a living creature?

While I in no way hold the pet store 100% responsible for the issues at hand, I also belive they have some amount of responsibility not only to the community but to the animals they sell to have some clue as how to properly care for what they are selling and to share that information with their customers.
