This was apparently an animal that the boy encountered outdoors. Likely one that some irresponsible person set free when they decided they no longer wanted to care for it. Clearly, as suggested by the photo, the boy was familiar with these animals and thought it was safe to try to capture/pick it up. It is quite possible that he had the animal's best interest in mind. I think it's a little harsh and presumptive to suggest that the boy was intentionally cruel to the animal. I spoil mine to death and he tried to take off my ring finger last week! :) Just thought I'd present an alternative view.
