If we were to address the importation issues and wholesale/retail issues two fold with both the USF&WS and with state legislation a big bite could be taken out of the problem. If adequate and enforcable state legislation were to be proposed and passed in the animal cruelty and animal welfare regulations it would lead to responsible sale of reptiles or for those that wouldn't adjust no sale of reptiles.
If quotas were put on the annual imports and with quarantines and health inspections on the animals that make the quota at our border by the USF&WS and the cost going onto the importing business it would promote better quality animals being imported, reduced natural habitat loss from collection, less animals distributed nationally for sale to the public and reduce the industry to those that are willing to do business humanely. It would also reduce the animals available for impulse buyers and carnival owners.
It isn't impossible and the best way to approach it is to find out who in everyone’s respective states can help with getting cruelty and welfare regulations implemented.
In the case of iggys it could stop the need of the iguana mills(farm raising)that are overpopulating the country with animals that are being left to die. If we can stop them from being imported and manage those that are here we could better solve our problems. Solving our problems with regulation, legislation and education. We wont get herp welfare without herp law.
And with a responsible approach to the hobby we can dispel many of the issues that fuel anti herp movements. As you know by looking at national statistics of iguana rescue and shelters there are big problems with this and too many other species.
I realize this isn't a popular subject but if people look at the carnage and don't seek a solution then I understand why reptiles are being used as a prize in a dart game. It’s time to make some changes .
