In Reply to: How To Deal With The Negativity? (long) posted by Wendy on January 11, 2002 at 14:13:45:
First of all, it is my opinion, that the principal was completely out of line in the way that he handled the situation. I would discuss what happened with your parents and have them decide the best course of action to take on that end of things. Even if, for whatever reason, he felt it was inappropriate for you to bring your snake into school, he shold have handled it differently.
When it comes to people's negative perceptions of companion reptiles, sometimes you do just have to agree to disagree. You can show by example, you can relate scientific fact, you can even stand on your head and hold your breath until your face turns blue -some people aren't going to understand how anyone could love a cold blooded creature. When people want to push an argument, we just smile and politely excuse ourselves from the conversation.
Bringing reptiles into schools is a tricky subject. Up where I live there are certain school boards who have passed rules that no one, not even a trained professional, can bring one into a school for any reason. There are lots of safety issues to consider, not to mention the fear factor often associated with reptiles. Because of this, some of us have been working on ways to educate about reptiles without having live ones with us and yet still make it entertaining to the kids. One thing you may want to consider, since you feel strongly about this, is to write a report on what it's like to own a reptile. Include facts about the animal, as well as telling the story of how you decided to get your snake. Include pictures, or maybe even some video. If you behave poorly, the principal wins, if you take the initiative to do something like this -that makes his behavior look even worse.
Good luck!
