Read and Learn as much as you can before taking the plunge. There is lots of information on the web and "Iguanas for Dummies" is an excellent book available at most chain pet stores. There are many older iguanas that need homes and adoption can be very rewarding, but as a new owner I would avoid animals with behavior problems. A young adult iguana that is already fairly tame and handleable may save you some frustration early on. Also, igs that are a little older are able to be sexed. I would recommend starting out with a female as males reaching sexual maturity can get pretty nasty. Not all males go through this but it's really impossible to predict. Perfectly tame, sweet, loveable males can turn into monsters overnight (I'm living with one now) and can be difficult to deal with often for months at a time. Learn as much as possible about proper diet, lighting, temp., humidity, etc. as these are all very important and can be quite expensive to maintain. This forum is a great place for info and many very experienced people can be found here. Use the search option to look up questions that people may have asked previously. Chances are you'll find a ton of great info but be sure to verify things through several sources. Don't believe everything you hear or read! Best of luck!
