I first came across those bulbs about a year ago, they made claims so fantastic and showed all these pretty graphs. Now, keeping in mind that I have seen no numbers on these (meaning I have not seen any radiometer readings), I can say the following. I bought one of these bulbs for my hatchling and within months he developed hammer toe. Hammer toe in this case caused by a calcium deficiency because the light did not produce enough UVB to be useful.
I've done a ton of reading and research into UVB bulbs and I have to say that before we found the mercury vapor bulbs, there was no other light on the market I trusted as much as the ZooMed Reptisun or Iguana Light 5.0. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't trade the mercury vapor bulbs we use for all the money in the world. Right now ZooMed Powersun bulbs are on sale at herpsupplies.com for around $45.00 -You buy one and it is good for a MINIMUM of one year -that means it produces levels of UV for that long, unlike the standard fkourescent tubes that need to be replaced every six months because the UVB dissapates at such a rapid rate.
