:To me, rescue means to take a living creature out of a near death situation.
Wouldn't you consider the situations in some pet stores near death?
The people I've talked to that have "rescued" animals from pet stores only do it when the animal is very ill and the store isn't getting it the vet attention it needs.
As for supporting the store, all the store owner's I've had conversations with say that profits aren't made from selling animals (at least not small animals) - they're made from the products people buy when buying animals. So wouldn't "rescuing" an animal (from time to time - NOT on a regular basis) without purchasing supplies from the store be ok?
