Early on in my crusade I paid ($30) to get an iguana out of a pet store. The boy had a broken tail, mouth infection, and a nasty fungal infection on his nuchal crest and spikes. My daughter would not let me leave the store without the lizard in hand. That iguana became my beloved Foster who passed away just a short time ago from heart failure. I still miss him terribly but....I would never to it again. If I can't convince the store owner/manager that a lizard will certainly suffer and die without immediate vet and intensive care and to give the animal up....oh well. Hopefully they will learn a lesson from their losses. Also, I hesitate to call iguanas like the ones surrendered to us Sunday "rescues". These lizards are in pretty good shape, seemingly healthy and have good temperaments. The female was purchased at the same show the month before as a male for $150. The new owner turned her over to us and made a donation to boot! Guess he found out in a hurry that iguana ownership wasn't for him. The male is gorgeous and quite sweet, just wasn't wanted any more. The smaller female is scared but doing well. She was rescued 2 months previously by an independent pet store, fattened up, and was then taking up valuable breeder space. I think I prefer to call these kinds of iguanas "surrenders" rather than "rescues".
