GLOBE & MAIL (Toronto, Ontario) 05 December 01 Letter: Plight of the iguana (Amanda Fenrick)
Pitt Meadows, B.C. As a reptile hobbyist, I must point out that iguanas don't make "rotten" pets (The Ethical Guide To Buying A Pet -- Dec. 1). They can be very rewarding, wonderful pets if you do a good job. They do, however, require a lot of space, a lot of work and a lot of money to keep. I recommend people stay away from them as impulse buys or Christmas gifts, but I have five and have spent thousands of dollars on enclosures and equipment in the six years I have had them.
Anyone considering buying one should find out as much as they can beforehand. Set up your cage with proper heat and light. Join a local reptile society (there's one in almost every province) so you have some people to offer you advice. And find a good vet who has experience with reptiles.
Most iguanas sold in pet stores die before their first birthday simply because of a lack of owner knowledge. Please don't add to that statistic. Buy reptiles responsibly.
