Iguana turns out to be a fire breather
By Tribune Staff
UEHLING -- Jeff Schakat knows what it's like to own a real "fire-breathing dragon."
Schakat's home at 105 Fifth St. in Uehling was destroyed by fire on Wednesday.
At first, it was thought that his 41Ú2 foot iguana had died in the fire. But Schakat said Thursday that the critter lived through a nine-foot fall into the basement and later crawled out alive.
The iguana was in the house for about seven hours, Schakat said, but is doing fine now.
Neither Schakat nor his 3 1Ú2-year-old daughter were at home when the fire broke out Wednesday morning. The blaze burned a hole in the living room floor, sending everything -- including the iguana -- into the basement.
