To each their own, as it is your call. But personally, I prefer to have my female lay eggs every year (she is with a male 24/7 as well) than take the chance of surgery.

A healthy ig cared for properly should be in no real harm from egging. Extra attention towards her during this time is needed, but it is not a dangerous situation.
