How do I clean a humidifier?

: I have an old humidifier, a cool mist. It was not used last year, but this year I want to put it in JJ's enclosure. I want to clean it first, though, so I don't risk sending germs, bacteria, etc through the air. I have heard to clean them with vinegar, but does that kill germs? Can I safely run bleach water through the system? If I do that, then run water though it 3 or 4 times, would it be OK to use, or should I take my mom's advice and just get a new one? : Thank you
