hey everyone,
well i'm bored so i figured i'd share my one story of an iguana i used to have a while ago. plus i have a few questions afterwards. Anyways, i'm 18 now, but when i got my iguana (Iggy) i was about 12. i was in 8th grade. this girl in my class ranted and raved for about a month about how she got an iguana for her bday. a little while later she had to give it away (have no idea why), and i was the only person in the class who was able to take it (my dad decided it was ok to keep at his house). so they gave us everything- cage (only a 20L), a heat rock (i now know that was a BAD idea) and a little branch thing, with carpet for the bottom. no lighting whatsoever. they told us he could live off of lettuce, and thats all they've been feeding him. being the stupid little 12 year old that i was, thats all that i fed him as well. didnt even bother getting a book on them or anything. my dad tried to get him to eat different veggies, but he was so hooked on lettuce that thats all he wanted to eat. well u all know what happened next. he got a calcium deficiency in his back legs and we had to put him to sleep :( we only had him for a few months or so. and he was only about 10 inches, not including the tail.
Now, thinking back on it, i REALLY wish we would have read up on the correct care for him. i miss Iggy, and it upsets me that this iguana didnt get the proper care that every iguana deserves. right now i have 3 leopard geckos that now live in his old tank, and im getting real into reptiles, and everything that comes along with correct reptile care. they absolutely fascinate me. I just feel like those ignorant people who impulse-buy the "cute little" $9.99 pet store iguanas and end up, well u all know how that story goes, whenever i think back on it. it sucks thinking back on him cuz i really wish he was here right now, all happy and healthy, ya know? its like, now im really starting to appreciate reptiles, and it sucks that i used to have one that could have been cared for properly, but wasnt. so there's my sad little story =(
now, i have a few questions to ask. just a few little ones. do the females have better temprements than the males or somethin? cuz i know that they generally become more agressive as they get older, and ive read more cases of the males than females getting the most aggressive. so i've just been wondering this for a while. because i really want to try another iguana. it wont be for a long time from now (im in college right now, and next semester i'm going to a different college further away, and i would like to finish college and get a place before i get one). i'm just gonna read up and stick around this forum for a while to learn as much as i can about them. I'm already reading the leopard gecko forum every day, every post. u learn so much from experts like u guys who are regulars on these forums! =)
so anyways, this is my long, pointless little post. thanx for readin! any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanx again!
Mel
