: Hi, I got a kitten (named Pedro) this week-end and I need a little
: advice. This week-end's story: Maya has his own room with his
: enclosure in it. Well by mistake, when we bought Pedro home, not long
: after we arrived he went near Maya's enclosure (Pedro didn't see the
: Iguana). Well Maya litteraly freaked out! He went crazy in his
: enclosure when he saw the cat. After I picked him up, went in the
: bathroom for a soak to calm down (because I know he feels safe in the
: bathroom)and talk to him to reasure him. Maya even peeled his nose a
: little (minor injury). Anyway for the rest of the week-end I put him
: on his basking shelf in the living room and he's just looking at the
: cat. Saturday he was stiff like a board and didn't move much. He
: didn't eat alot either (I forced him by putting greens in his mouth).
: Sunday was better..he was less stiff and was moving around in his
: enclosure. And at a time he was pretty close to the cat and didn't
: freak out, he just doesn't move and is in weird positions (I know
: that's normal). When the cat is in his room near the enclosure, he
: doesn't freak out, he just looks at him. By the way, the door of
: Maya's room is closed during the night and when we are not home for
: now. I would just like to have some advice on how to proceed by
: someone who had the experience. The cat didn't see Maya yet. Or he
: doesn't care really. Maya even interested sometimes or enjoying the
: entertainement by looking at the cat play from his basking sheld in
: the living room. Maya will eventually be relaxed and start eating
: right?
: Thanks Helene
Helene: I've read stories on the various boards in the last few months about cats, dogs, rats, who got into the iguana's room/enclosure and ate the iguana. To play it safe, don't let them alone together EVER. The iguana is probably scared of the iguana. The other day I took mine to the vet to have his nails clipped. Well, it's also a boarding facility and my iguana freaked out just HEARING dogs barking. She took off and ran into the pet supplies part of the vet's office and I had a heck of a time catching her. Your iguana is giving you little hints (stiff as a board), etc. Whereas it felt safe before, it probably doesn't. Just because it can't see the cat, it most likely will be able to smell it. I would definitely keep the two as far apart as possible.
