Your iggie is probably regarding you as the "big bad wolf" right now. He thinks anything larger than he is will eat him. It takes LOTS of time and patience to get your iguana to tame. Now I'm sure there are iggies that take less time, but it took me (and a lot of people I have met on the boards) six months to tame mine. They have to get to trust you and know you. Every time I would reach into the cage, mine would bite and whip his tail. Once I got him out, he was okay.
I bought a little baby coverlet at K-mart for 5.99 and started picking him up with that. Well, a year later, and he's still sleeping with the "blankie". Iggies LOVE soft things, so you might try a little blanket or something soft to pick yours up. I wish I would have tried it sooner, because once I did it, even if he tried to bite, it was the cover and not my hand.
