: I know that frozen foods as a diet will lead to a B deficient diet. Is there any other diet that will cause this?
A frozen food diet will, in most cases, not lead to a B deficiency. When we first came across this as being the potential problem for one of the rescues, I immediately blamed poor diet. The truth of the matter is, vegetables as a rule don't have that much vitamin b to loose in the freezing process in the first place. The reason I say that in monst cases it will not lead to is because it depends on what is in the salad. Frye gives an excellent explination of thiamin deficiency -
"Thiamin (vitamin b1) deficiency IS NOT caused by feeding a thimain deficient diet but, rather, by feeding a diet which contains a natural shource of thiaminase -an enzyme that destroys thiamin already in the iguana's body tissue. Some plants, particularly certain ferns adn other ornamental house plants, contain this enzyme." -Fredric L. Frye, DVM "Iguana Iguana -Guide for SUCCESSFUL Captive Care" 1995
