Mine hates to be contained outside as well. He is a little unpredictable outside so it is rare that he gets to go there. You can get a leash, just find one that works for you and test it on him indoors. Get him used to it. I would recommend keeping him up high outside like on a table or something because they feel safer this way and are less likely to flip out (and start gator rolling in the leash). My last iguana hated his leash. I haven't tried one with Sleestack since he is bigger, but he was okay with his last one. Flapjack my bearded dragon is fine with his leash!
As far as taking him on trips-- you can use a modified dog carrier. I put plexi over the door grate so he couldn't rub his nose as much. Then wherever you stay, let him have the bathroom (set up basking lights etc.) for him. He will probably be okay in the bathroom (take out the rugs and towels in case he makes a mess). This is what we did with my last iguana who had no problem traveling. Sleestack freaks out in the car. If you are unsure of how yours will react in the car, I suggest trying to travel at night (then he will go to sleep and you will have less worries).
