In Reply to: A salad with no greens... posted by Ian on November 08, 2001 at 18:03:38:
: Hi i was on the melissa kaplans site and i found this salad it consists of...
: 1/2 cup of shredded raw green beans (i just snap them several times and smoosh them with my fingers)
: 1/2 cup shredded raw orange-fleshed squash ( i use buttternut)
: 1/2-3/4 cup of alfalfa pellets (rabbit food pellets)
: 1 med or 2 small raw shredded parsnips
: 1/4 cup mashed/minced fruit ( i use apples... good for respiratory system?)
: Also says then add in a multivitamin supplement, says this salad is healthier than greens and greens souldnt be more than 45 % of diet, says to use collards, mustards, dandelion, escarole on the side of the salad, but not to add the greens till the iguana has begun to eat salad and his a plate cleaner. I Gave the green beans, and butter nut squash portion of salad to my iguana and he was thrilled he almost fell off one of his posts reaching for it he loved it, i havnt tried the rabit pellets yet but will get some tomorrow, and i didnt have an apple to try either but will also get one tomorrow. My iguana liked the squash and the beans more than he does collard greens or the other greens. Is tis salad really more healthy?

I have never liked the way MK wroteinfo on iguanas. Iguanas are folivores, meaning they ar leaf eaters, ther main diet cosists of leaves and flowers. they do not pick up rabbit pelets and apples in the wild. Although ido believe they should be gettig some supplementation cause we can never imitate the natural sun they recieve in nature. I also believe it is alright to occasionally give Veggies and fruits as treats and small portons of the diet, but greens should NEVER be left out of an iggys diet!
