He would puff up his body, extend his dewlap, and sometimes gape his mouth open. He would always try to give you a full side view of his impressive size, sometimes to the point of practically laying on his side if you were standing right over him. And of course then he would wiggle his tail back and forth quickly, and let loose with a flurry of the meanest head bobs you've ever seen!

While your's may not go to that extreme, I would lay money on that his tail waggin is a prelude to a tail slap. Just go by what signals he gives you, and he'll let you know where he likes to be touched, and where to stay away from.
