Hi all!
I just wanted to write something here, mostly to an audience of one, but also to the rest of you.
I was recently in a Scamps pet store in Eugene, OR where baby iguanas were being sold for a 'super low price, one time only' $10. The first thing I noticed were mitamin covered crickets running around a cage with one incandescent bulb for light, and like twenty baby igs. The second thing I noticed was a middle aged lady about to ask the saleswoman for information. I listened in on her questions and the advice. She is a highschool teacher locally, and wanted to buy one of these iguanas as a classroom pet. She asked about calcium, diet, lighting, size, etc. and was told that they could eat crickets, would fit in a 55 gal aquarium for a few years, needed a heat lamp or a HEAT ROCK, and would be perfectly tame, even as babies. While I agree that a well-maintained Ig is about the most pleasant animal I have ever had, a nervous baby in a class of 40 teenagers may not be.
While I stepped in and corrected as much damage as I could, the point may not have gotten accross. The first thing I did was give her the web address for www.kingsnake.com, and told her to look here. I am sort of praying that she has, and if she is reading this, she should feel free to email me. I sort of wish that I had given her my phone number or some other way to keep in touch as I cannot fathom what that baby is in for if she follows the advice she was given.
To the rest of you: is Scamps a national chain? If so, I would seriously suggest some authorities be notified. They keep their animals dirty, too cold, too expensive, and marked wrong (I saw a Desert Phase Cali Kingsnake marked as a Greybanded and priced at $120).
Thanks.
nate.
