I finally read the book. I may get flamed, but the reading is worth the $10. No where do I see anything about gathering all the reptiles and putting them to sleep. Instead the report blasts importers, pet stores, impulse buyers and idiots who won't take their reptile to the vet. It is like they are on this board and read all the posts. The report also attacks the fair giveaway problem, hot rocks and calcium spray, and idiots who release their pets into the wild. The report acknowledges that there are people who can care for their pet but says the general public is hopeless.
My proposal is that the reptile people announce that they also have problems with fair giveaways and pet store misinformation
and challenge the HS to jointly work to correct it. There are some interesting cases in this report and it does not require a law to make changes. Many US and state agencies can make a policy change (this is what Maine did.
The report also talks alot about wild caught reptiles and captive breed reptiles and the difference in health. Interesting reading.
Also, just as the editorial in the Reptile magazine said, we owners need to watch what we and others do. It is not the HS that will get reptiles banned, but the people who treat them as "throw away pets." We, the people who care, have a job in education to do.
