Active bulbs are a mercury vapor bulb that produce both UVB and heat.
Unilke standard flourescent bulbs, they produce higher levels of UVB, do not need to be replaced every six months and do not need to be a minimum of 12 inches away from the animal in order to supply usable UVB.
In an enclosure where we used to run a 5.0, a basking light and a sperate heat source such as a radient heat panel, we are now using an Active or Powersun (made by ZooMed) during the day and the RHP at night for heat. This one bulb does the job of 2 or 3 seperate elements per enclosure.
We only have one of the ZooMed bulbs and have been told that they push the same UVB as an Active. Currently the Powersun only comes in one wattage and in the flood style. I am hoping that they increase their line as I have to say I prefer the Powersun both in style and the light it gives off to the Active. Only time will tell if the light is as effective as the Active bulb.
