Hi everyone!
I was planning to wait until I got a picture, but it doesn't look like I will get one for a while.
"Classy" is doing absolutely incredible! I got up the courage to call his (yes, his) owner to see how he was doing around the end of August. The news I got truly made me want to start to cry. Lucky for me I didn't because I was talking to a complete stranger! She really is a sweet lady though, welcomed me with open arms to come and visit her and Classy and time I wanted.
Turns out that in the month and a half since I had seen Classy last he gained over a pound and a good 2 inches. Remember, this was at the end of August so I'm sure he's grown more by now!
Classy eats like it is his last meal every meal. But that is totally understandable considering he used to get a bowl of romaine lettuce a few times a week! His new owner was telling me about how every time he wants to look big and impressive he has to lift his big "Frisbee" belly off the ground. I laugh every time I think about the lethargic little guy I grew to know and love being fat and feisty!
I was really worried that Classy and the other iguana wouldn't get along because they were really having troubles. Luckily, the lady had a dog to baby-sit and Classy is quite scared of dogs, and went to the other iguana for protection. They've gotten along ever since!
I felt bad being the one to tell her how Classy was kept before. She had no idea about the cramped little cage with the horrible screen and everything. She didn't know the bad food he was getting either, or that he didn’t “need” water or UV lights. But, thankfully, the vet (reptile qualified and everything!) said that Classy was healthy other than being too skinny and having a mild case of mouth rot (I was right!).
The two iguanas free roam her apartment, which is full of trees and basking lights. Classy’s new owner said that sometimes it seems like a tanning bed instead of a house!
As soon as I go into town (I live out in the sticks) on a good day for a visit, I will take some pictures and post them for you all to see. It is really you guys here at the forum that Classy has to thank for his new home. There was so many times where I wondered if I was over-reacting and if what I was doing wasn’t right. Thank you all so much!
I’ve been researching and learning everything I can about iguanas since then. I think I’ll be getting Melissa Kalan’s book for Christmas. I hope that in the future I can adopt an iguana and give it the home it deserves. I’ve read things on how to tell if an iguana is for you. All the things that are supposed to make you think again make me want one even more. I remember about 5 days after Classy came to my house for Christmas break, he actually came up to feed out of my hands, and it was the best feeling in the world! He never did it again, but I knew that it was something that would take a lot of time to establish that kind of trust, and it is something I can’t wait to do!
Thank you all again, I will post pictures as soon as I get them.
Take care, Wendy
