BOLTON EVENING NEWS (UK) 22 October 01
Second iguana finds a home with Neville

A second iguana has been found braving the British weather in the Bolton area.

The leaf-eating lizard, which was discovered by workers at Jumbles country park, has been adopted by woodland manager Neville Kidd.

It was feared the animal, which is more accustomed to the sunny climes of South America, would have to be put down by the RSPCA if a suitable home could not be found.

Neville, from Chorley, said: "I felt really sorry for him as he had obviously been abandoned. I've kept reptiles before so know I can give him a good home.

The scaly orphan, christened Iggy, was rescued when he was spotted near the dam at the reservoir.

Headworks controller Paul Mather was doing his usual checks when he discovered the three-foot long reptile.

Paul said: "I rang our wildlife warden for advice and he told me to throw a coat over it and keep an eye on it until he arrived.

"When my coat started walking off I had to hold the iguana until we could get it into a special cage."

It is the second iguana to be discovered in the Bolton area. A four foot long animal found at Rivington reservoir before Christmas was not so fortunate and had already perished in the cold weather.

Wildlife warden Ron Varey said: "This area might be known as a wildlife haven, but you wouldn't expect to see one of these.

"It's almost certain that these animals were bought as pets and abandoned by their owners when they grew too big. It's sheer cruelty to expect them to be able to survive outdoors in this country."
