You know, every time I hear of more iguanas being abandoned or put up for adoption, it breaks my heart. The numbers seem to constantly escalate with those few, wonderful adoptions not putting a large enough dent in the problem.
You are right though - they are extremely tough to adopt out. What never ceases to amaze me is the amount of people that contact us willing and able to provide the necessary care and attention for these larger boids and crocodilians but when it comes to iguanas...those individuals seem to be few and far between.
One of the things that keeps us plugging away at it (6 more iguanas this past week alone that are still being processed) is that we remember those success cases that we have helped (including the decrease in the # of strays this past year in southern Ontario). As well as knowing that we are all doing our part to help prevent the problem from getting worse.
It is impossible to overstate, in my eyes, the importance of education and other preventative measures.
I truly do wish you and the other rescuers here the best of luck in finding homes for all these iguanas. Its a daunting task but it warms my heart to see people still trying to do what they can.
If only more people would care...
My perverbial two cents worth...
Candace
