It would get real messy in a real hurry. I too am into vivariums like you describe, but they are better suited to dart frogs, small lizards, or even chameleons. Iguanas are (or get to be) big heavy lizards that would uproot plants, throw dirt everywhere, and use any corner as a restroom, no matter how potty trained you thought you had him. Also, loose substrate is not reccomended for iguanas, as they could ingest it (in the course of eating, or just out of curiosity) and it could cause impaction. It would also be difficult to keep a proper balance of moisture, either too dry, or too moist, and a risk of mold, mildew, fungus, etc.
On the positive side, I have created a jungle for my JJ with ALOT of Fake plants, branches galore, and a water bowl that looks like a rock. I used linoleum printed to look like wood grain for his floor, and sealed it with silicone to make it water tight. It is the tops in easy clean up!
: is it possible to create an iguana cage with natural substrate with live plants? I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to see pics or plans where someone has done this. I am just not sure if it would be feasible, would it get too toxic after time?
