This ?? is for someone familiar with lighting electronics.
I already knew that various fluorescent fixtures run UVB lamps efficintly, and others run them very inefficiently. So I decided to contact websites and manufacturers to get recommendations for the "best" ballast/starter configuration for the lamps for the sake of maximizing UVB output and lamp life.
I called Zoo med directly to talk to a technical assistance person. She told me that the 15 inch and 18 inch iguana lights bulbs are T-8, and should run with a fixture that has a 205 milliamp rapid start type ballast. Supposedly, the smaller bulbs need more “kick“ to start. She wasn't sure about the T-40 lamps though.
Is it true that Zoo Med’s other iguana lights, (type T12) require just a regular high-end rapid start ballast? What about instant-start and magnetic ballasts with starters? What about the new (the new federally mandated standard) 34-watt ballasts - are the "40-watt" UVB tubes designed to work with them? Or are they T-40s that are actually designed to work with true 40 watt fixtures?
My research resulted in confusion :-( Help!
