Protein is hard on the kidneys which could account for the swelling. I wouldn't feed him either of those foods. He needs some fresh veggies like collards, mustards, dandelion, watercress, escarole/endive, sprinkled with squash and maybe a little fruit like (berries, mango, melon) Has the vet ruled out kidney failure?
