OK, the point that should be noted here is that while there are some studies that suggest that wild iguanas consume animal matter, there are also some that suggest that they do not.
Conclusion?? Situationally dependant I'm sure. It MAY be possible that wild iguanas will consume animal matter for an unknown reason.
What should be remebered through all of this, is that it IS known that TOO MUCH animal proteins WILL cause health problems. How much is TOO much? Really this is not important! A wild iguana cares not for its longevity, it cares that it stays alive for THAT minute, THAT day! In captivity, this is obviously not a problem or concern, and as such we as repsonsible ig owners should not take the chance to guess the TOO MUCH question, and SHOULD be concerned with the longevity of our pets. Hence, no animal proteins in captivity.
You are most likely correct that a few bugs will not kill an iguana, but a few here and there can easily turn into several more frequently. No one can say what effect this will have on the life span of the animal. I for one would not want my igs life cut short by even one month due to potential effects of animal proteins.
