Alright, a pet-store question

Yeah I know that pet stores are the last place to ask questions about 90% of reptiles, but I was told yesterday that Ig's are very sensitive to UV light. They said that there is a slim happy medium. I understand that they need to get a certain amount, but the guy said they can get too much. I decided not to debate with him, but my question is, can they get too much? It doesn't make sense to me, since in the wild, they can bask on top of trees for days. I understand you can't keep your light on for 20 hours and expect a happy Ig, but realistically is this something to worry about, "TOO MUCH"?
