Dear Georgia,
While I appreciate the fact that since you're considering getting another iguana, that must mean that at least on some level, you're enjoying being an iguana owner, I have to say to you that I very much hope you'll reconisder getting a "girlfriend" for Egor.
Earlier this year, I took in a second iguana who was sure to die in his current situation. I was excited at first, since I thought my female might like a companion. Boy was I wrong! They fought terrifically in the first few months, and have only now started to "tolerate" one another. We still have to keep a constant eye on them to make sure they're not biting each other--or ever worse--trying to mate.
I would NEVER breed them. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of unwanted/ill-cared for iguanas in this country. I would hate to think that I added to that number.
Please think it through. The decision is still yours, but there are many people on this board who would like to help you and be your friend who are hoping you'll not get a female for Egor for the purposes of mating.
90 % of baby iguanas die within the first year of life in captivity because not many people care for them properly. Please don't add to that problem by trying to breed igs for money.
If you love iguanas like most of us on this forum do, and if you want a second one because you genuinely enjoy them and want to do some good for their species, consider adopting a second adult iguana who is in desperate need of a home. There are HUNDREDS who will die this year because they don't have a home or the proper care. If you have the money and room and love for a second iguana, please don't buy a baby from the pet store (that just causes pet stores to restock more) but rather, get one from a rescue group. You will feel SOOOO good when he or she looks up at you with that "thank-you" look on their faces. A rescued iguana is a thankful iguana. I cannot tell you how often I feel that Bobbit (my recent rescue) is trying to tell me that he appreciates what I did for him by getting him out of his horrible nightmare former life.
I hope you'll stick around on this forum and be our friend in the iguana world. I'll watch for posts by you and pop in and say hi from time to time.
In the mean time, I hope you'll consider what I and others who are concerned have written. We really have nothing but the best intentions, even if we do come off as impassioned.
Hope you'll stick around and learn along with us...
Diana
