Feeding even 5 crickets a week can potentially cause liver, kidney and heart damage to an iguana. According to Frederick K. Frye, DVM, MSc, CBIOL, FIBol Fellow, Royal Soceity of Medine, who has authored many books, "It has now been proven that green iguanas thrive, grown to maturity, and reproduce without developing MBD, abnormal mineralization of soft tissues, or visceral gout when fed a diet in which the only source of protein is nutritious fibrous plant protein." (Iguana Iguana: Guide for SUCCESSFUL Captive Care, Krieger Publishing Co. 1995)Visceral and articular gout can be caused by feeding animal protein to an iguana. Joint swelling, lameness, kidney failure, heart failure and other problems will present.
So, if you want to potentially kill your iguana or at the very least make your iguana sick, by all means feed animal protein. If you want a healthy ig, feed a vegan diet!
