In Reply to: How often do you buy greens?? How do you keep them fresh?? posted by Ivan on October 09, 2001 at 09:42:01:
: Whats up guys? I have been having an issue wiith my greens lately, so maybe you could help. The collards, mustards, and dandelions come in such big bundles that I dont know what to doo with them. I tried using half and freezing the other. When i got the frozen half out of the freezer, that resulted in a dark green soggy mess that freddy didnt eat as much of. So...I got a new batch last week and chopped it ALL up and put it in the fridge and have been feeding him like that, but this morning the dandilions and collards smelled like you know what. Im buying a new batch today...how do you suggest I handle my greens????
Ivan:
This method keeps mine fresh for about a week.
The collards -- cut the bottoms off (leaving some stems) and store them in a pitcher of cold water. This also works for turnip tops and chard.
When you get into the dandelion greens, mustard greens, endive, escarole, and (on occasion) romaine -- I trim the bottoms off and roll them in paper towels and store in a plastic bag. The towels absorb the extra moisture and keep the greens fresher. Mustard greens seem to smell no matter what after 3-4 days (LOL). I also buy my iguana sugar snap peas. If you store them in a little container of water, they will plump up and stay really crispy.
When I feed mine -- I will run the greens under water again (iggies need a lot of water) and then I put the ends into a rectangular container of water (low, flat container) at the basking spot (my iggie free roams in a room and lives on the top of a dog pen. If you keep it away from the light, it should stay fairly crisp for you most of the day. When I do this to my veggies (all of the above), they will last at least a week (provided they're fresh to begin with). I buy chard every week and usually two others (I try to alternate), so she has a variety.
