: Mr D is cooking us some dinner and so it's my turn to field Active questions.
: The reason we aren't running all Active bulbs is partly economics and partly unsuitability for certain enclosures. We have 10 enclosures, since we currently fund our rescue setup with our own money, we've had to buy the bulbs as we can afford to. You do the math, $54.99 x 10 is a good chunk of money! A few of the enclosures we have were either donated or procured before we even knew about Active bulbs and really aren't setup to be able to use them.
: For the closet enclosure you are talking about I would suggest a 160 watt flood bulb. You will not need a secondary basking light but I can't guarantee that you will not need a secondary heat source, that will really depend on the ambiant temperature in your home. In any case, I would suggest a RHP (radient heat panel)for night time heat vs. a light. A 7"x12", 25 watt should do the job and will run you about $54.00. We like them for the safety features availble (they shut off in case of malfunction) and the research we have seen strongly suggests that they are more efficient to run. Furthermore, the surface temperature of them does not get hot enough to do any serious damage to either reptile or human should there be contact.
