They're doing fine. They're getting ready to burmate shortly. I have 20 eggs in our incubator currently. Just waiting for them to hatch. We have 1 hatchling at this time, who is growing like a weed. Total amount of collareds right now is 8.
We just recently had 5 eastern box turtles hatch, which brings the total to 7 box turtles.
Fence lizards are doing good, they are also getting ready to burmate.
We have 3 new chuckwallas coming next week, bringing the total of them to 4 and they'll be burmating also. Still only have 1 bearded dragon and she will also burmate soon.
So basically, all of our reptiles other than our 3 iguanas will be going down shortly.....well except for the hatchlings which we'll keep up this first winter. I just love these lizards that burmate......ya get 4 whole months off!!

As far as the cost of a CHE..our oldest one is 4 years and still running. We can purchase these units for around 26.00 each, which bring the 4 year old one to less than 7.00 a year. Now there is a CHE that is shaped like a floodlight which I would NOT purchase since they are made just like a light bulb is with an element (which burn out just like a light bulb). We buy the ceramic flat ones which have a molded coil inside of them. As far as energy goes, they use 60 watts which is the same as a light bulb. And since we use them for the basking areas, we don't have the extra cost of running basking lamps. We also have a few 100 watt ceramics that we use during the winter time to boost heat levels but at times we have to cut them off since we keep they room at around 80 some degrees all winter long.
As far as fire safety goes, a basking light is as dangerous as any CHE could be. To really understand how these fires started, you would have to know just what the condition was during that time. Like why was there newspaper anywhere near a CHE? If you're going to free roam your iguana, making your house iguana proof would include but not limited to, making sure items such as the newspaper could not get knocked into the ceramic heater. I would also fasten down the ceramic heater to the cage so it couldn't be knocked off the cage also. But in my opinion, I would NEVER allow any of my iguanas to free roam around CHE's or any electrical devices (6 way power strips, extension cords, etc..) this is asking for your iguana to get shocked or to cause a possible fire. Many people do not realize that iguana's finger nails can get into outlets and cause a short.....and kill their iguanas. I would suggest buying those blank plug covers if you're going to free roam your iguana.
A side note....the post a few lines up where the guy was talking about a ceramic socket switch.....that's NOT a ceramic socket but a material that is used to make some electrical boxes and other stuff. It's not really plastic...it's a mix of different materials. We have 2 of them in our house and both of them have quit functioning (switches). We don't use them for CHE's but just regular light bulbs for the fence lizards and collared lizards. And the max wattage we use in them is 75 watts but they are rated for much more. True ceramic sockets have no switches. We set ours up by way of a 6 way plug and just switch off the 6 way. We also run all of our CHE's on 6 way strips that carry breakers so if for some reason something happens to the CHE's or the socket bases, the 6 way will trip. Many people have the wrong understanding about 6 ways....they don't protect the equipment plugged into them, what they designed to do is cut power off if the equipment shorts out. I hear people all the time buying these units to plug their computers into them, thinking that if there's an electrical storm it will help protect their computer.....this is completely false. It's just another gimmick companies try to pitch to sell more units.
Well, I could go on and on...but I have a few things to get done here at the house.
Here's a link to our reptiles at our house. If you click on the collared link you'll see what's my real proud and joy.....I just love these little guys.....can't wait until next year to start trading and selling the offspring.
