In Reply to: Spines (spikes) revisited... posted by JohnT on September 28, 2001 at 15:59:27:

: Just a quick thought... If you have a spine with shed that just WILL NOT come off, you can use a pair of sharp pointed fingernail scissors to remove it effectively. You must be very careful when doing this so as to not injure the spine under the shed. Remember, the spines are modified scales, and are living tissue with a blood supply, so be very careful not to cut them.

: I recently had one of Bug's spines retain the shed, and no amount of baby oil, soaking, teasing, etc. would budge it. I finally used the scissors, and removed it successfully.

: First, BE SURE that the shed is ready, and is really a problem. You should not attempt this if your ig is skittish, or will not hold still. You will see the edge of the retained shed going completely around the spine, so at the point where it seems to be the least attached, GENTLY bend the spine to the side, and slip one point of the scissors under the shed. Cut gently, and slowly, and QUIT if you feel significant resistance. You should not have to cut much before the shed will slip free. This procedure should remove even the most stubborn spine shed.

: Best regards,

: JohnT
