Some people on this forum do this, although there are many things to consider. Yes you need to monitor heat temps and humidity and have the proper UV light as well. Also, ig-proof the area he has access to-- outlets, breakables, dangerous areas, small objects big enough to swallow (and yes they can eat anything...my last 5footer had a 6" toy, a penny, and some rocks in his stomach found during his necropsy).

If you can give him 1 room or a large closet, it may be easier to set up the appropriate conditions. Also, you have to worry about a mess if he is not potty trained (and even when they are they can have accidents from time to time). Some sort of potty area or schedule would need to be established.

And, if you set up a basking area for him with the proper temps and UV, but he chooses not to sit there-- this is no good either. These are all issues that I considered and finally ruled against when I instead decided to build Sleestack a new cage. This is not to say you cannot have a happy free roamer, but monitor him on a regular basis (paying attention to these guidelines) if you want a healthy iguana. I, personally, could not insure that he would get enough UV or heat each day-- and I knew he would start pooping on the floor instead of waiting until I get home from work (he doesn't want to go in his cage, but doesn't care about the rest of the house!)
