The Humane put this out in the newsletter:BAN THE SALE OF REPTILES AS PETS:
Reptiles are becoming increasingly popular pets in America. About nine
million are kept in about four million households - a 44% increase in only
a two-year period. There are significant humane and conservation problems
caused by the trade in reptiles as pets. An estimated 90% of all
wild-caught reptiles die within their first year of captivity due to
stress and trauma caused during collection and shipment, as well as by
inappropriate care after they are purchased. The survival of many species
is threatened by over-collection for trade and by destructive collection
methods. The Food and Drug Administration has within its power to ban the
sale of reptiles as pets due to health risks, such as Salmonella bacteria.
Every year 93,000 Americans contract salmonellosis from pet reptiles; tens
of thousands of people are hospitalized and about twenty die. Most victims
are children.
