Part of me respects the view that we should stop allowing reptiles as pets in this country.
Although I dearly love my two adopted/rescued iguauas, Habib and Bobbit, and would not want to give them up, I do know that they would be happier/better off in the wild where they came from. Not a day goes by that I wouldn't love to take them to a tropical island and let them go free to live the natural life they were created to live.
Living in urban Utah isn't exactly the life for an exotic, tropical, humidity-loving lizard. I often wish I could see Bobbit sitting high atop a palm tree swaying in the breeze, or watch Habib go off toward a waterfall for a swim.
Part of me thinks that reptiles would be better off if we didn't allow them to be imported to this country. But since they are here, I try to do my very very best with the two I have adopted from careless/uninformed owners, and I see to it that they have what they need to survive. Many iguanas aren't as lucky as our are here on the forum. Here, we find responsible owners, like Ig Chick and Mr. D, Christy, iZ's mom, xta, JNelson, ECKO, Harry's Dad, Samcin, BabyHerp, Jiff, Dishy, Phil, Marissa, Tif, Chris, Ian, Lexi, Brian, the two Sue's, Benny's Dad, Craig Loose, Nikki's dad, Michelle, Chris, and Karen. But the majority of iguana/reptile owners don't seem to put as much as you folks do into their pets.
My own cousins have two iguanas locked in the atic, and feed them if and when they remember to. They feed lettuce and carrots, and have no uvb light, and don't take them outside for uv. I fear that many igs around the country are kept in conditions like this and it makes me sad, angry, and sick. Hearing iguana abuse stories breaks my heart and I've heard enough on this forum to last me a life time.
Anyway, this is just my take on the interesting article Desiree posted. Thanks, Desiree, for making me think; I like to be stretched.
I agree--banning reptiles will never end up happening, but in some respects, iguanas would be better off if it did. I'm not saying I think we should all have our iggies taken away from us, but just saying that I recognize that in many instances, exotic imports are a big problem and that perhaps iguanas and other reptiles would be better off if left in the wild where they have been thriving for millenia.
