In Reply to: ...deworming CYCLURA - and GUT FLORA? posted by Mitch Sanders on January 16, 1999 at 20:37:32:
The cyclura breeders I know with more than 10 years experience
all treat their cyclura for internal parasites at least once a year
if not every six months.
Since they are outdoors you really do not need to do a fecal,
they most likely WILL have internal parasites of some kind.
Treat nematodes and tapeworm with panacur suspension (100mg/ml)
at the dosage of 25-50 mg/kg, given orally once every week
for about 2 or 3 treatments.
You do not need to worry about killing good intestinal
microflora treating with panacur. Panacur basically immobilizes and sterilizes adult worms
so that they cannot attach to the intestine wall and thus are shed in the poop.
This is why you must treat again in 7 days, because the eggs already laid will have now hatched and
the new adults worms must be again immoblized and shed in the poop.
If you also choose to do so, treat protozoa with Flagyl
Flagyl is 25-50mg/kg, given once and repeated 3-4 days later.
Protozoa treatment is not really worthwhile if the cyclura are living outdoors,
they will get them probably very fast again and in low numbers,
these guys are really not much of a problem.
If you treat with flagyl yes you might want to give something like
NutriBAC to replenish good bacteria which will help with digestion.
DO NOT GIVE FLAGYL TO A GRAVID CYCLURA WITH VIABLE EGGS.
Good luck!
