In Reply to: Salmanella poisoning !!! What are the symptoms??? and.... posted by ECKO on August 31, 2001 at 15:47:46:
what these scare-tactic articles fail to mention is that you are MORE LIKELY to get salmonella from eggs or raw chicken than you are from a pet reptile and that dogs and cats can also be carriers of salmonella ...
80% of all reported cases of Salmonella are FOOD-RELATED, only 2- 7% are reptile related.
You are far more likely to get Salmonella from food than you are from ANY animal, including reptiles.
salmonella is the MOST COMMON form of food-poisoning.
It is considered a "self-limiting" disease. That means that it will usually resolve itself with NO medical treatment.
Many people do not even realize that they actually have "salmonella" ~ it's usually THAT mild and short-lived ... it's usually chalked up to being "the 24hr flu" ...
Symptoms of infection are abdominal cramps, diarrhea, + fever. It lasts from 2- 7 days and is done.
As with ANY kind of infection, there is the chance of becoming quite ill.
This is POSSIBLE, BUT NOT LIKELY.
Complications arise when the infected person has a weakened immune system to begin with and/or seeking medical attention is delayed.
Dehydration is the most common complication of Salmonella.
prevention is SIMPLE!
wash your hands!!!
if your reptile uses your bathtub, clean tub with suitable disinfectant afterwards!
don't put food plates/dishes on the kitchen counter/table or in the kitchen sink ~ anywhere where human food/utentsils may also be placed ~
UNLESS you disinfect these surfaces as well
and the article Samcin mentioned is at NRAAC's article
Bon.
